Theme Giant Bulb – Still life of flowers

This Giant Tulip Bulb is based on the flower still lifes by for example Rachel Ruysch (1664-1750) and Jan Davidz de Heem (1606-1684). Ruysch was one of the most successful still life painters of the 17th century. A flower still life by Ruysch always consists of a carefully combined bouquet in which each individual flower is itself. The background is dark, in contrast to the flower still lifes by, for example, Jan van Huijsum. This accentuates the shape of the flowers. Ruysch painted until she was 86 and was very successful.
