Theme Giant Tulip Bulb – Bulb of biodiversity
This Giant tulip bulb illustrates the importance of (soil) biodiversity and symbolises how important soil life is for biodiversity above the ground. The more life underground, the more life above the ground. It also represents the positive influence of nature on the (language) development of young children as well as innovative DNA research (metagenomics). If you look closely, you will discover stories about the diverse research carried out by Leiden University of Applied Sciences and its cooperation partners in the Bio Science Park and in the city of Leiden.
Artist – Rafael Martig
While studying biology, Rafael realised that no place on earth is untouched by humans. As a bird researcher, he saw first-hand the challenges facing wildlife. Working with meadow birds on a Dutch Wadden Island, he understood that storytelling plays a crucial role in conservation. This realisation led him to change from scientist to visual artist. His work has been exhibited at institutions such as Museum De Fundatie, Rijksmuseum Muiderslot and Artworlds Foundation. My sold-out solo exhibition at the Natuurhistorisch Museum Rotterdam (2020) consisted of monumental oil portraits of vulnerable meadow birds, gaining national media attention and raising a lot of money for their conservation.
